Boston Spartans Football Club was formed from the youth club team who used to play at Deepdale. The original name came from a gent called Jack Hutchinson, who was Caretaker at Deepdale School at the time, and was from the North East and  had been a Blyth Spartans fan

THE PITCH AND YOUTH CLUB AT DEEPDALE

Spartans began in Season 1965-66 in the Harrogate League 3rd Division, first fixture was against NLLST ( British Library) away at Thorp Arch Trading Estate.
The Club had previously won the Claro area Youth Cup beating Bishopthorpe 4 -3 and as a result were asked to represent the area in the West Riding Youth Competition where we played Bradford District away under floodlights and were narrowly beaten.
One of the highlights of the League season was a 25 - 0 win against Christ Church Old Boys at the Close where every player scored ! Goalie Geoff Pledge scored with a penalty, This must surely be a record ?
1966 - 67 saw the team in Division 2 and after playing 24 games, a record of 18 wins,3 draws and 3 defeats saw Spartans promoted again as Runners up to Helperby.
For 1967 - 68 it was decided to field a Second team in the Harrogate 3rd Division. Once again the 1st team finished Runners up in Division 1 and were promoted to the Premier League.
In their first Premier season Boston were Runners up again, this time to a good side Gascoignes from Garforth who were winning the County Cup about then. Harrogate Town & Railway Athletic were also in the League at this time along with the likes of a very good Wetherby Athletic and an emerging Boroughbridge

In 2000/2001 season Boston Spartans FC joined the West Yorkshire League. There are two teams that play each Saturday in the 2nd Division and the Reserve Division. Both teams in their first two seasons have finished poorly in the wrong half of the league table. The only success to date was the second team picking up the Fair Play Award 2001/2002.
At the beginning of season 2002/2003 the introduction of a new management team, new players, new committee members and local young players it has brought an improvement to both teams league position and overall performance, with the First team finishing in fifth place in Division Two and the Second team eighth place in the Reserve Division.
For season 2003/2004 both teams had good runs in all cup competitions reaching the semi-final stages and  only going out to teams from higher leagues. In the league competitions again the First team ended up fifth position and the Second team a lowly second bottom despite having quite a good season.  . The Under16 team did well in their first season as Boston Spartans Juniors, in their respective league they pushed  last year’s winner all the way. They narrowly lost the league cup final  but won the Barkston Ash District Cup beating Tadcaster Magnets 4 nil in the final.

Season 2004-05 saw the formation of a veterans side which played in York Corinthians friendly League and in the May took to the field in Charity match against Leeds United ex-players ran out winners winning 3-1.  This match in raised over £2500, which was donated to St John’s school for the Deaf in Boston Spa and the Dialysis Unit at Leeds General Infirmary.
Season 2005-06 as probably the most disappointing we have ever had. It started well but players drifted away which meant the reserve side had to fold. With only one team remaining we managed to finish the season but in the bottom half of the table. Our chairman, Mark O’Brien, sadly died during the summer after a short battle against cancer, and  local businessman Kevin Morrall took on the Chairman’s  role. Over 35’s in their first competitive season, reached the semi final of the York Corinthians friendly League and were unlucky losing after extra time and penalties. In September they took to the field again in another Charity match against Leeds United ex-players but it was Leeds that ran out winners this time winning 4-1.  This match in Mark O’Brien memory raised over £2500, which was donated to St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds, Martin House in Boston Spa and the Dialysis Unit at Leeds General Infirmary.

After what was probably our worst season ever, 2006-07 was one of best we have had in the recent past with the return of former manager Jimmy Wilson and his backroom team. This has brought an influx of players and results have showed this. The club narrowly missing promotion to the First Division by only 3 points,  going all the way to the final game of the season. The players also conducted themselves in a true sporting manner throughout the season only picking up 4 yellow cards in total, for this they were awarded the Division Two Fair Play Award. The Club also secured funding of over £500 from the Football Foundation and the Parish Council to replace the goal posts at Stables Lane. On a sadder note we were unfortunate enough to lose the Club Chairman, Kevin Morrall, who died unexpectantly while on holiday. Over 35’s had another good season winning the York 11 a side tournament at the beginning of the season and reached the semi final of the York Corinthians friendly League losing out to local rivals Harrogate.

Season 2007-08 has started well for the First Team but the Reserve team is struggled to find their feet. Jimmy Wilson took on the Chairman’s role and Chris Conway took over as Manager. 2008 brought one of the proudest moments for Boston stalwart Chris Conway as manager, he lead Boston Spartans to their very first West Riding County FA Challenge Cup Final. From over 128 teams from all over West Yorkshire, Chris and his team made it to the final where they were beaten 5-3 by East End Park in extra time. Despite being 2 nil down at half time Boston fought back to lead 3-2 until East End Park levelled in injury time to take it into extra time.
